Dec. 8, 1969 — HAYDEN’S LIVING TRIBUTE

A number of friends of Dr. W.C. Hayden recently presented him with a basket full of cards along with an open fund, the Dr. Hayden Fund, established at Idaho First National Bank. The fund will offer revolving loans to deserving young people planning to enter the medical profession.

The fund, a community expression of thanks to Bill for his years of service and friendly counsel, is being swelled by patients and friends of Dr. Hayden, who is suffering from cancer. He underwent surgery some months ago but it was unsuccessful in halting the spread of the malady.

GEORGIA-PACIFIC, HEDLUND MERGER

Announcement was made in Portland jointly by Leroy E. Hedlund, president of Hedlund Lumber Co. and N.A. Merlo, vice president of Georgia-Pacific Corp., of the acquisition of the Hedlund sawmills and wood chip production facilities by Georgia-Pacific. Mills at Chilco, Priest River, planer and yard facilities at Sandpoint and a related Ione Lumber Co. sawmill and mill site in Washington state were involved.

BULLDOG CAGERS OPEN AGAINST STAGS

Opening their 1969-70 season within the friendly confines of their own court, Coach Duane Ward’s Sandpoint High School Bulldog basketball squad takes on Deer Park here Friday night. Team members include Bill Phillips, Steve Knoblich, Mike Geenen, Craig Leckner, Randy James, Bruce Wells, Bruce Ahner, Bruce Carter, John Goin, Roy Jacobson and Dale Kedish.

Dec. 8, 1919 — CITY BREVITIES

A son (Dwight) was born to Mr. and Mrs. R.F. Crowell, who live 2 ½ miles west of town.

Richard R. Button and wife moved back to Spokane for the winter. They built a house on N. Sixth, but were unable to plaster due to the cold weather. They will return to Sandpoint when the springtime makes their house possible to live in.

FOUR-L’S OPEN NEW CLUB HOUSE

Tonight chronicles a new chapter in the history of Sandpoint’s lumbering industry, with the opening of the Four L’s club house just across the Humbird bridge over Sand creek. The building, formerly a Humbird Lumber co. boarding house, adapts wonderfully to its new use. The club house has a splendid recreation room, 24x24 ft., a kitchen and lunch room, two women’s rooms and a large combined gymnasium and dance hall, 30x50 ft., with a new maple floor, waxed and ready for tonight’s opening dance.

FIRST FREEZE-UP SO EARLY

Ice, varying from six inches to two feet thick, formed during the recent cold snap for three-quarters of a mile out from the city dock. It is the earliest freezing of the lake in memory.
