SPOKANE VALLEY — Two games into this season, the Lake City Timberwolves have reached two-thirds of last season’s win total.

Varick Meredith, one of three freshmen in the rotation, scored 14 points and five T-Wolves reached double figures as Lake City romped past East Valley 75-39 on Saturday in the Border Clash at West Valley High for a 2-0 start to the season.

“We were curious to see if what they did in the summer, and how practice looked, how it would translate into games,” Lake City assistant coach Kelly Reed said. “Not a surprise, but a confirmaton that we can play a little bit. We’re excited, but we understand there’s a ton of work to be done.”

Ben Janke added 13 points for Lake City. Seth Hanson had 12 points and four assists, and Chris Irvin also had four assists as the Timberwolves totaled 21 assists to just eight turnovers.

“It was a representation of how well we moved the ball tonight,” Reed said. “We shot it well, but we took open shots because of the ball movement. And it was a super, solid team effort defensively.”

Lake City travels to Moscow on Tuesday.

SPOKANE VALLEY — Ben Zubaly and Noah Haaland had 17 points each for the Hawks in a win over the Eagles in the Border Clash.

Ammon Munyer had 14 points and nine rebounds for Lakeland (4-0), which led 27-13 at halftime.

“Our defense was working well tonight,” Lakeland coach Dave Stockwell said. “We played really well defensively and our scoring was pretty spread out.”

Abe Munyer had seven rebounds and six assists for Lakeland, which visits Bonners Ferry on Tuesday.

KELLOGG — Graden Nearing had 13 points, six rebounds and three steals for the Wildcats in a win over the Tigers in the championship game of the Silver Valley Tournament at Andrews Gymnasium.

Gavin Luna had 13 points and six rebounds and Tyler Oertli 12 points and eight rebounds for Kellogg (2-1), which led 37-27 at halftime in a rematch of last year’s 3A District 1 title game, won by Kellogg.

“We jumped out to a good lead and just kind of hung on from there,” Kellogg coach Jeff Nearing said. “We struggled to get shots to fall in the second half, and missed our fair share of gimmes, but found a way to win. Timberlake was aggressive and defended really well. It was just kind of a grinder.”

Zach Yetter scored 13 points and Jacob James had 10 points for Timberlake (1-2), which hosts St. Maries on Tuesday.

ST. MARIES — Eli Gibson scored 17 points for the 2A Lumberjacks in a romp of the defending state 1A Division I champion Pirates.

Greyson Sands had 12 points and Sean Elliott added 11 points for St. Maries, which shot 34 of 54 from the field.

“We shot the ball really well,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “They pressed us a lot, and it seemed like we got some layups off that. And also knocked down some open jumpers, which was nice to see.”

Randie Becktel had 10 points and eight rebounds for St. Maries (2-0), which travels to Timberlake on Tuesday.

PENDLETON, Ore. — Talon Twoteeth scored 17 points for the 1A Division II Knights in a win over the Oregon 4A Tigers in the Nixyaawii Invitational.

“It was a good game for us,” Lakeside coach James Twoteeth said. “We were a lot quicker that they were. We were kind of nervous to begin with as they’re a bigger school (613 students) and we’re up 20 most of the game. We played some bigger schools during the summer and the boys are starting to get used to that mentality going into a game and playing like that.”

JJ Hall scored 15 points for Lakeside (3-0), which hosts Kootenai in North Star League play on Thursday.

NEZPERCE — Sophomore Luke Trogden scored 30 points to cap a 63-point weekend, Skye Gallaway added 12 points and the visiting Tigers wrapped up their season-opening road trip with a victory over the Indians on Saturday.

“This was about dribble penetration, and finishing at the basket,” Mullan coach Paul Elston said of Trogden, who scored 33 points in a 61-58 loss at Highland-Craigmont on Friday night in Craigmont.

Elston praised the defense of Floyd Nelson, a freshman, and Caden Crandall over the weekend.

“We’re trying to play some different opponents; trying to see some more teams from the Whitepine League,” Elston said.

After playing with mostly the minimum five players last year, Mullan is up to eight this year. But one of them, junior Riley Trodgen, is out for at least another two weeks. Elston said Trogden was running lines at practice recently when he crashed through the glass behind the basket, and needed some 70 stitches.

Mullan travels to Deary on Thursday.
