Gibson rallies St. Maries past Timberlake
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 5 years, 1 month AGO
SPIRIT LAKE — The St. Maries Lumberjacks came out a little sluggish in the first half — something coach Bryan Chase thought could happen, for a young team playing its first road game of the season.
Then Eli Gibson, one of the few holdovers from last year’s state 2A runner-up squad, got St. Maries going.
Gibson scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half, including a steal at midcourt and basket early in the fourth quarter to give his team the lead for good, and the Lumberjacks went on to beat the 3A Timberlake Tigers 53-48 in nonleague play Tuesday night.
“He was pretty fired up (at halftime),” Chase said. “It was nice to see some leadership out of him. He led the troops out of the locker room, and the kids seemed to follow suit.”
Randie Becktel added 10 points and eight rebounds for St. Maries (3-0), which trailed 24-15 at halftime. Gibson also had five steals and four assists. He hit two 3-pointers in the third quarter, helping the Lumberjacks tie the game at 33 heading into the fourth. He hit 4 of 4 free throws in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.
Jack McDonald scored 12 points — all on 3-pointers — in the fourth quarter for Timberlake (1-3). He finished with 16 points.
“They just played a better two minutes at the end of the game,” Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. “Their offense just came alive; the second half they started hitting shots, and Gibson got hot.”
On Thursday, St. Maries is home vs. Wallace, and Timberlake is home vs. Sandpoint.
