Winners named
The Priest River Lions Club held their fourth annual shopping spree drawing at Mitchell’s Harvest Foods. Three names were drawn for specific amounts. Winners were Father Gooley, $400; Doug Wagner, $200; and Sue Staples, $100. Profits from the fund-raiser go back into the community in many ways.

Christmas House closing
After 14 years of holding open house during the month of December with only a single one-year hiatus, Mrs. Claus is tired and wants to rest--permanently. The interior of Richard and Jennie Monroe’s Settlement home, about 3 1/2- miles east of town, will close forever to public viewing on Christmas Eve.

Likens resigns
E. Wayne Likens, school superintendent in Bonner County for the past nine years, will leave the post in June, the school board learned Tuesday night. In a letter to the board, Likens said he would “neither seek nor accept another contract.”

Thieves make double trouble
Robert O’Brien of Post Falls did considerable damage to his 3/4-ton pickup Monday evening when he lost control and went over an embankment of the Boswell-Kings Lake Road. When he returned next morning with a wrecker he found that someone had stolen the fuel, rear tires, and miscellaneous tools from the vehicle, according to Deputy Sheriff Wally Mitchell, who investigated the accident.

Smylie signs, but disapproves
The reluctant signature of Gov. Robert E. Smylie has made official 36 cottage site leases on Priest Lake that he had opposed.
Smylie contended that more than 36 people were interested in the (Pinto Point) sites and therefore a public auction should have been held.

New church nearly completed
Work is progressing rapidly on the new Baptist church now under construction at the intersection of the Coolin and West Branch roads north of the city.
The building is being built under the supervision of the Rev. Eugene Howd, pastor of the church.

Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan of the Royal Buck Dude Ranch on the Upper West Branch, were in town Tuesday.

Replanting needed
More than 2,100,000 acres within the National Forests will require artificial planting, says the Forest Service. Bad fires in the past or logging by destructive methods before the lands came under federal administration have denuded these areas.

Businessman holdup tried
When returning home Monday evening after business hours, Gus A. Naccarato, proprietor of the Priest River Mercantile, was held up at the top of Finstad hill. Mr. Naccarato jerked a gun from his pocket and shot at the highwayman. The second highwayman fired a shot that tore through Naccarato’s coat within a few inches of his body. After the exchange of several shots the highwaymen ran down the hill.
