MOSES LAKE — As a matter of fact that was Grant County Sheriff Tom Jones, Moses Lake Police Chief Kevin Fuhr and uniformed law enforcement officers handing out menus, cleaning off tables, fetching soda pop and to-go boxes. The sheriff’s office and MLPD teamed up with the Rock Top restaurant for the third annual Tip A Cop Thursday night.
Law enforcement officers work the restaurant floor for two hours — might want to think twice about that second beer, being delivered by the sheriff in full uniform — and all tips they earn go to the Shop with a Cop program. Rock Top employees make a donation as well, along with hosting the event.
The Rock Top was packed, pretty noisy, with little room to maneuver between the tables. Fuhr said it was fun regardless. “This is a blast. I love this night. Socialize with the community and have a great time.”
The money raised goes to a good cause, he said. The children who go shopping with the cops, and their families, get some help in what might be rough times. The Shop with a Cop program is funded entirely with donations. “It’s for the kids and the families,” Fuhr said.
“Super fun time,” Jones said of Shop with a Cop.
Thursday was also the last night in the great “Hobbs and Shaw” burger competition, a twist on the fundraiser for 2019.
Jones and Fuhr each got the chance to create a hamburger for Rock Top’s menu to be served during December, they said. (The burgers are named for characters in the film “Hobbs and Shaw,” part of the “Fast and Furious” franchise.)
For the record, the sheriff’s Shaw burger featured fried pickles, pepper jack cheese and a special sauce of his invention that included ranch dressing and A1 steak sauce. The chief’s Hobbs burger included bacon, pastrami and havarti cheese.
As of about 6:30 p.m. Thursday, the Hobbs burger was in the lead. “I’m winning currently,” Fuhr said. But Jones was promoting the Shaw as customers walked in the door. “I’ve been really pushing those burgers,” he said. The winner got bragging rights for the next year.

Playground planned, tentatively, for Othello’s Kiwanis Park
OTHELLO — A new playground probably will be coming to Othello’s Kiwanis Park, but funding will affect the timeline. It’s the next phase in improvements to the park, some of which are finished, some of which are ongoing. Othello did receive a grant to upgrade the Kiwanis Park basketball courts. A timeline for that project will be announced. Sarah Montemayor, the city’s grant coordinator, said Othello officials submitted grant requests to the Washington Recreation and Conservation Office to upgrade the parking lot and build a new playground. The city got part but not all of the grant, she said.
