SPOKANE VALLEY — Payton Wysong (106 pounds), Alex Edelblute (126), Riley Siegford (138), Carson Heim (145), Cooper Johnson (152), Colton Boettcher (170) and Hunter Oles (195) of Lakeland High went unbeaten on the first day of the Inland Empire Classic on Friday, moving on to today’s semifinal round.
Lakeland is second with 114 points. Chiawana of Pasco, Wash., leads with 122 points.
“I was excited with how the kids wrestled today,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. “To be second, in our first match of the year, it’s kind of a great accomplishment. There’s still a lot of rust on them, but to see them come out and compete when some of the other Washington schools have had three or four matches, it’s a good feeling to know there’s only going to be growth from here.”
Dom Jessos (120 pounds) advanced to the semifinals for Coeur d’Alene, which is 10th.
“The kids we brought wrestled tough,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “We’re down five starters due to the flu, and only took 12 kids. We were just a little unlucky, but thank God it’s December and not February.”
Coeur d’Alene has nine wrestlers remaining, Lakeland six in the consolation bracket.
The tournament resumes today at 10 a.m., with finals scheduled for around 3 p.m.
