POST FALLS — Led by point guard Jayce Simmons and 6-foot-10 forward Gavin Gilstrap, Central Valley controlled the tempo and defeated the Post Falls Trojans 61-50 in nonleague play Saturday at The Arena.

Simmons scored 25 points, and hit 9 of 9 free throws down the stretch for Central Valley (4-1). Gilstrab added 19 points.

“We played at CV’s pace tonight, and we settled way too much to take shots they wanted us to take,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “But that’s why we play teams like this; this game exposed little things we need to do a better job of.”

Colby Gennett had 18 points and seven rebounds for Post Falls (3-1). Caden McLean hit four 3-pointers and added 12 points, and Alex Horning had eight points and six rebounds.

“They just bludgeoned us (32-21) on the boards,” McLean said.

Post Falls travels to Clarkston on Monday.

SPOKANE VALLEY — Freshman Zach Johnson scored 15 of his team-high 21 points in the first quarter, also finishing with five rebounds and four steals to lead the Timberwolves to a nonleague win over the Titans.

Freshman Kolton Mitchell had 20 points and five assists and senior Seth Hanson 14 points for Lake City (4-1).

“Any one of our nine could be our leading scorer on any given night,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “The great thing about today was Jack (Kiesbuy) was really hurting, and the other kids stepped up and played great. Zach’s first quarter was something else and Kolton had an unbelievable floor game.”

Lake City finished the game 8 for 16 from the 3-point line.

“In the first half, we didn’t play the best defense,” Winger said. “We only allowed two 3-pointers in the second half and did a much better job of guarding the perimeter. It was a good win for us.”

Conrad Bippes scored 21 points for University.

“Jacob was on fire today,” Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. “He hit five 3-pointers and did a great job. But we were 10 for 23 at the foul line, and that kind of says it all. We won in most parts of the game, but need to work on our free throws. But it’s something that we can fix.”

Sandpoint led 30-27 at the half, but Kellogg outscored the Bulldogs 16-6 in the third quarter.

Tempers flared down the stretch as Sandpoint senior point guard Kobe Banks fouled out and received a technical before taking a seat on the bench, leaving the Bulldogs without their best scorer for the final four minutes.

“We’ve had some pretty good stretches, but haven’t been able to put it all together for four quarters, so the effort was good tonight from beginning to end,” Kellogg coach Jeff Nearing said. “I thought we did a good job of keeping our composure. Things got a little heated and emotional, but for the most part, we did a good job.”

Banks had 13 points and six assists, while Ryan Roos had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Sandpoint (2-2), which hosts Timberlake on Thursday.

“On defense, we were missing assignments, we were late on rotations,” Sandpoint coach Wade Engelson said. “And we have to make sure that we don’t do that.”
