James Hutchens, P.A. welcomes Stapleton

For years she has been a familiar face to many in the Sandpoint community, serving as the manager of Starbucks in both downtown Sandpoint and Ponderay. But now Tomi Stapleton is eager to serve her community in a different capacity as she begins her accounting career with the office of Jim Hutchens, CPA.
Tomi is originally from Northern California and first came to Sandpoint to visit her dad when she was just 16 years old. She instantly fell in love with this community and decided to call Sandpoint her home. Now, 17 years later, she is embarking on a new career, one that she was drawn to when she recently enrolled in an accounting class.
“It just naturally clicked with me,” said Tomi whose undergraduate degree is in communications with a certification in human resources.
After arriving in Sandpoint, Tomi worked at Monarch Mountain Coffee for six years. She then worked at Bonner General Health in the accounting department while simultaneously working two other jobs — one at Starbucks and another at a local tanning salon. It is that same drive that has enabled her to recently complete her classes on her journey to becoming a certified public accountant while working over 40 hours a week at Starbucks.
“Tomi is very driven and has a passion for accounting and helping people,” said Jim Hutchens, who adds that her reputation in Sandpoint for providing superior customer service is very well known and respected. “We are very fortunate to have her as part of our team.”
With her schooling now complete, Tomi plans to sit for the four-part CPA exam over the course of the next year while working for Hutchens. She shares that in her role at Starbucks she came to know many people in the community and learned that Hutchens has an outstanding reputation. “I knew Jim as a customer, and so I reached out to him,” said Tomi. “The more I talked to him and learned about him, I knew this is where I wanted to be.”
Tomi’s husband Grey works for Selle Valley Construction and the two could not imagine living and working in any other community.
“People in Sandpoint are so welcoming, and I’m really excited to be able to serve this community in a different way,” said Tomi of her new venture.
