KELLOGG — Five Sandpoint wrestlers placed at the George Wild Tournament on Saturday.

Nineteen teams from across Idaho and Montana took part in the event and over 200 wrestlers participated.

The Bulldogs were led by freshman Jacob Albany who took second at 98 pounds.

Fellow freshman Forest Ambridge also placed at 98 pounds, capturing sixth.

Senior Brady Nelson had a strong showing placing fourth at 152 pounds among some tough competition.

Freshman Raphael Eldridge and sophomore Kaleb Fleck also earned sixth place results at 126 and 132 pounds respectively.

Sandpoint head coach Jake Stark was proud of the performance of his younger wrestlers.

“Malachi Fleck, Brady Nelson and Isaiah Caralis were the standouts on Saturday,” Stark wrote in a text. “Some of our younger freshman wrestled really good too, Jacob Albany showed a lot of heart and Carson Laybourne had a big pin at the end of the tournament to close out the night.”

Prior to Saturday, the Bulldogs competed in a trio of duals on Friday.

Sandpoint took down Flathead (Mont.) 48-36 and were led by its lightweights who earned pins at 98, 106, 113, 120 and 126.

Overall, the Bulldogs earned pins in eight of the 14 matches to claim the victory.

Sandpoint then took on Timberlake. It was a tight dual with the Tigers, but in the end Timberlake prevailed edging out the Bulldogs 46-42.

“We fell short to Timberlake but we had them on their heels the whole time and we held the momentum the entire match,” Stark wrote.

Jordan Birkhimer, Malachi Fleck, Blake Sherrill, Brady Nelson, Christian Troumbley-Karkoski all earned pins but it wasn’t enough.

The Bulldogs also battled Clearwater Valley, losing 46-34.

Nelson earned his third straight pin during the duals while junior Trevan Adam grabbed a pin at 145.

Despite losing, Stark said the Bulldogs wrestled just as good as they did in the first two duals.

The Bulldogs don’t get much time off and head to East Valley High School 6 p.m. tonight to battle the Knights and Cheney.

Below are the results from the three duals and the five wrestlers that placed at the George Wild Tournament.
