Dramatic Club

successful

The first presentation of the Pend Oreille Dramatic Club at Wright’s Theatre Friday night was quite a success. The attendance was not as large as had been anticipated owing to the extreme coldness of the weather. The gathering present filled the hall quite comfortably; and, judging by the applause, the three one-act comedies put on by the club were a success from every standpoint.

90 Years Ago — 1929

Fann closes business

The quitting business sale put on by Warden L. Fann two weeks ago went over with such a bang that he has been able to close his establishment sooner than expected. He is now packing all unsold stock and removing it to Metaline Falls where he will engage in a similar business.

80 Years Ago — 1939

Runaway truck damages homes

A forestry truck left running and parked to the south of the high school building broke away and crashed into the Otto White home. Careening from a corner of the building, it ran into the porch of the Jake Hoepfer residence. Both buildings were badly wrecked. Those in charge of the truck were picked up and turned over to camp authorities.

70 Years Ago — 1949

Cheap postage

Unsealed Christmas cards require two cents postage this year. Cards with messages must go first class and take three cents postage.

60 Years Ago — 1959

Lake ski run opens

The ski run on Lakeview Mountain at Linger Longer Lodge on Priest Lake is ready to operate this weekend, according to Bud Thompson, manager of the lodge. He said tow ropes are in operation and a warm-up hut is conveniently located on the run.

50 Years Ago — 1969

Outstanding teams selected

Aleta Carpenter, Carolyn Kondo, and Carol Shirk have been selected as Outstanding Teenagers for 1970 at Priest River High School. Nominated by their school, they will compete for state and national awards in the Outstanding Teenagers of America program.

40 Years Ago — 1979

Two educators taken

Bonner County School Superintendent E. Wayne Likens, 52, died of an apparent heart attack early Saturday at Yakima, Wash., just four days after announcing his plans to resign as superintendent. Iris Virginia Hammons, 63, Bonner County elementary school supervisor, and former Priest River teacher and principal, died of cancer three days later in Spokane. She was the longest-serving employee of the school district.

30 Years Ago — 1989

Christmas Classic coming

The Christmas Classic basketball tournament is set to go. The big question will be whether the Priest River boys and girls can repeat as tournament champions. Last year the Priest River teams had to turn back the Newport Grizzlies for the titles.

20 Years Ago — 1999

Hill kids are winners

Idaho Hill Elementary’s 5th grade Gifted/Talented students placed first in the statewide Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl held Dec. 7. Team members were Barbara Mosteller, Lucas Trunkey, Jamie DeHaven, Keela Behm, Mary Ruskovich, Danny Nave, Greg Cork, KC Nave, Zach Clow, and Dustan Thiers.

Legislators coming

Sens. Shawn Keough and Joyce Broadsword and Reps. Eric Anderson and George Eskridge will be in Priest River Friday to talk with the community at a luncheon sponsored by the city and Priest River Chamber of Commerce.
