FIRE CALLS

Sandpoint firemen answered two calls within 30 minutes last week. At 3:01 p.m. they were called to the Arthur Shields home at 404 Railroad Ave., where a chimney fire caused minor damage to a roof. At 3:30 p.m. an overload in a lighting circuit brought a fire call from Sandpoint Beauty School, 2nd Ave. and Cedar. No damage was reported.

BONNER COUNTY TREES SENT TO BOISE

Seven Bonner County Christmas trees were sent south by Sandpoint Jaycees. Six of them will help cheer things up at the Boise Children’s Home and the seventh will grace the governor’s mansion. Bill Derr, Clark Fork, provided the trees and the Department of Law Enforcement transported them to Boise. Bill Brown and Dennis Kellburg were on hand to give the trees a sendoff.

Dec. 19, 1919 — FROZEN WATER PIPES

The below zero weather last week raised hob with many of the city water mains, in some cases resulting from the cement sidewalk contractors leaving the lateral pipes too near the surface and in others the mains being too shallow beneath the pavement, a conductor of cold. The worst hit part of town was out First avenue where four or five leaks had to be remedied. Many householders in various parts of town have been without water service for a week, owing to frozen pipes.

THERMOMETER TAKES SHOOT UP

From 17 below on the night of the 11th to 39 above on the 18th, the cold wave which hit the northwest has been followed by unseasonably warm weather. Much needed moisture is running off the ground as a result of the depth of the hard freeze accompanying the cold weather. Where the city water mains are being repaired, a depth of two feet of frost has been found in places.

NEWS FROM BUNGALOW

December 17, the day set for the big storm, was uneventful except for considerable rainfall and a much higher temperature.

Boys and girls: Old Santa Claus sent a wireless saying that he will be at the Christmas tree at our schoolhouse Saturday evening. So be on hand and see what he has in store for you.
