A not-so-sweet Vegas sendoff for Petersen

Is that any way to treat someone who improved both programs at which he coached over the last decade and a half?

The bowl gods were unkind to Chris Petersen, making his Washington Huskies face his former team, Boise State, in his final game — for now, anyway — as a head coach.

Petersen coached Boise State from 2006-13, bringing them to prominence with that overtime win over Oklahoma you may have heard about. When he left for U-Dub, Bryan Harsin took over in Boise and has kept the Broncos among the country’s top teams in his six seasons.

You would think everybody would be excited to play in a bowl game, but many times these games come down to which team really wants to be there.

Boise State might be a little more hungry, especially after its bowl game last year was canceled after a few minutes of play because of weather.

The Huskies entered the season with dreams of a bigger bowl game — the Rose Bowl, or even the College Football Playoff.

As for Washington State, going to bowl games with regularity is still a new thing for the Cougars. So even at 6-6, WSU is still excited to go bowling — besides, how many other bowl games offer a pool at the stadium?

The touchdown celebration possibilities are endless.

As for last we picked ...

Both of us had Boise State beating Hawaii in a no-brainer in the Mountain West championship game.

That means Jason is 39-9 on college picks, 82-26 overall. Mark is 33-15 on college picks, 74-34 overall.

This week we threw in a bonus pick, just because.

Happy holidays.

COLLEGE

Las Vegas Bowl

Boise State (12-1) vs. Washington (7-5)

Saturday, 4:30 p.m.

NELKE: Going in, I thought the Huskies would still win, despite their mediocre (by their standards) regular season. But two Washington players are skipping the game because they have NFL aspirations next season. And who knows who else in Montlake has already checked out.

Boise State, 31-28

ELLIOTT: This is a no win situation for Chris Petersen unfortunately. Lose this game, and he’s going out with a loss to the school he put on the college football map. Win, and everyone expects it since Washington is the bigger school.

Washington, 35-31

Cheez-It Bowl

Washington State (6-6) vs. Air Force (10-2)

Friday, Dec. 27,

Chase Field, Phoenix

NELKE: If any team would be equipped to take down WSU’s Air Raid, you’d think it would be the Air Force. It will also be interesting to watch the Cougs try to stop the Falcons’ triple option. Definitely a contrast in styles; might even be a fun bowl game to watch.

WSU, 31-20

ELLIOTT: Likely could be the most points scored in a bowl game this season.

Air Force, 48-40

BONUS PICK

NFL

San Francisco (11-3) at Seattle (11-3)

Sunday, Dec. 28, time TBA

NELKE: Depending on the results of this week’s games, the winner of next Sunday’s 49ers-Seahawks matchup could rule Western civilization for decades — or, at least, be the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs. The loser will have to play every single playoff game on the road for the rest of their lives — or just for this year, at least. Though the task is certainly daunting — The Great Russell Wilson is an MVP candidate who, at age 32, has at least another 18 seasons left in him — you certainly didn’t expect me to pick anything other than ...

49ers, 23-22

ELLIOTT: Trailing 23-17 late in the fourth quarter, Russell Wilson floats a pass to the endzone that gets tipped by Richard Sherman into the hands of ... Tyler Lockett.

Seahawks, 24-23
