Coeur d’Alene High
baseball coach Mahin resigns
COEUR d’ALENE — Nick Mahin, who coached the Coeur d’Alene High baseball team the past four seasons, has resigned.
Coeur d’Alene athletic director Mike Randles said Mahin resigned for family reasons.
Mahin had an overall record of 67-35. In 2017, he guided the Vikings to the state 5A tournament, where they won the consolation championship.
Coeur d’Alene won the 5A Inland Empire League last season and finished 21-3, losing to Lake City for the region’s second berth to state.
“Nick viewed his players as student-athletes, holding them to high standards both on and off the field,” Randles said. “His passion for baseball, combined with his rapport with kids, will make him difficult to replace.”
WSU women’s soccer coach
receives contract extension
PULLMAN — Washington State and Cougar head women’s soccer coach Todd Shulenberger agreed to a contract extension that will keep the coach on the Palouse through June of 2025, WSU athletic director Pat Chun announced
In Shulenberger’s five seasons at WSU, the Cougars have won a record 61 games, including posting a single-season record 16 wins in 2019.
This fall, the Cougs played their way to the program’s first College Cup, becoming the only program at Washington State to play their way to the final four in an NCAA Tournament in modern history. Along the way the Cougars defeated No. 14 Memphis (1-0), No. 3 Virginia (3-2), West Virginia (3-0) and No. 5 South Carolina (1-0, OT) in their run to the cup. Among those wins were victories over a No. 1 seed and No. 2 seed, both on the road in hostile environments in addition to wins over the AAC regular season champion, ACC tournament runner-up, and the SEC tournament champion. The season ended in a hard fought 2-1 loss to No. 2 North Carolina in the national semifinals. The Cougars finished ranked No. 4 in the country, the highest ranking in program history.
The Cougars have advanced to the NCAA Tournament in four out of the five seasons with Shulenberger at the helm, including three straight.
Bridget Rieken, a freshman from Lake City High, was a starting center back this past season for the Cougars.
