Lake City captures 5A IEL opener

COEUR d’ALENE — Brooklyn Rewers and Brenna Hawkins led the way as the Lake City Timberwolves jumped out on top early en route to a 60-46 victory over the Lewiston Bengals in the 5A Inland Empire League opener for both teams Thursday night.

Rewers, a junior, had 27 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots for Lake City (7-2). Hawkins, a junior, added 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Jaya Miller had nine points for the Timberwolves, and Ashlynn Shanley hit two 3-pointers and added eight points.

“We did a good job in transition, getting out and getting some early baskets,” Lake City coach James Anderson said. “We had some moments where we moved the ball well and got it inside where it needed to be. Brooklyn and Brenna played their hearts out.”

Gabby Johnson scored 16 points, Tai Bausch 15 for Lewiston (1-7).

Lake City returns to action Dec. 27 at Cheney.

SPIRIT LAKE — Brooke Jessen scored 16 points to lead the Tigers past the Hawks in a nonleague matchup between district rivals.

Taryn Soumas scored 13 points and McKennah Kronenberg added 10 for Timberlake (6-4), which visits 4A Moscow on Saturday.

“We played really good defense, especially in the first three quarters,” said Timberlake coach Matt Miller, whose team led 41-15 after the third quarter. “We did a good job of protecting the paint and the girls played well on both ends of the court.”

Katy Ryan scored seven points for Lakeland (3-7), which hosts Bonners Ferry on Saturday.
