RIGBY — It was everything Post Falls wanted out of its three-games-in-three-days road trip to eastern Idaho.

A talented opponent, a rowdy crowd and a tough environment.

And the visiting Trojans delivered.

Colby Gennett and Alex Horning each scored 20 points, and Gennett hit a clutch 3-pointer with 2 minutes left as Post Falls fended off the Rigby Trojans 62-59 in a nonleague game Friday night pitting two of the top four ranked teams in the state in 5A.

“That’s as good a high school environment as I’ve been a part of,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said.

Rigby is ranked third, Post Falls fourth in 5A in this week’s state media poll. Post Falls beat Rigby 57-48 in last year’s third-place game at state.

At halftime Friday, Rigby honored its state 5A football champions, who beat Coeur d’Alene in double overtime at the Kibbie Dome four weeks ago. Several of those players are on the basketball team, including quarterback Keegan Thompson, wide receiver Christian Fredericksen, tight end Brycen Uffens and defensive lineman Tanoa Togiai.

Post Falls (6-1) jumped out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter, and held the lead until Thompson hit an 8-footer in the lane with 2 1/2 minutes left to put Rigby up by one.

Post Falls worked the ball around, and Gennett drained a 3-pointer from the left wing, and the Trojans were never headed.

“It was a grind,” McLean said. “I’m very proud of our guys, to be so resilient. We faced all kinds of adversity ... stuff you have to deal with on the road. And when things didn’t go our way, we answered with something good.”

Horning hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter, and scored 14 points in the opening eight minutes.

Britton Berrett led Rigby (5-1) with 18 points. McLean said Berrett came in averaging four 3-pointers a game, and Post Falls, with McLean’s son Caden guarding him the entire game, held him without a 3.

Isaac Ballew scored 11 points for the second straight night for Post Falls. Jake Rutherford had eight assists, Gennett seven rebounds.

Post Falls concludes what McLean dubbed its “Toughness Tour” today at Madison of Rexburg at noon PST.
