City of Mattawa approves 2020 budget

MATTAWA — Despite the winter weather that blanketed the Mattawa area on Thursday, Dec. 19, the Mattawa City Council still was able to pass the 2020 budget. The budget was changed after the last council meeting to account for new positions being added to the city.
For 2020, the City of Mattawa expects its overall revenues to be $3,266,737. Expenditures are expected to be $3,879,901.88. They anticipate starting the year with $4,176,538.58.
The city expects to receive $1,326,054 into the current expense fund and spending $1,459,295.88. The beginning balance for the year is expected to be $753,691. The street fund is anticipating $366,395 in revenues and $376,935 in expenditure. The ending balance for 2020 is expected to be $418,112. The capital improvement fund is starting the year with $99,525. Revenues are expected to be $14,642, with expenditures anticipated to be $15,000.
The water operating fund is anticipating $551,336 in revenues and $841,484 in expenditures. The opening balance for the year is $842,978. The water debt fund is starting the year with $37,435. They anticipate $70,030 in both revenues and expenditures. The customer deposit fund is anticipating $3,206 in revenues and $1,849 in expenditures. The ending balance for the year is expected to be $22,085.
The sewer operating fund is expected to start the year at $551,913. Revenues are expected to be $472,277, with expenditures to be $674,329. The sewer debt fund is anticipating $51,472 in revenues and $55,317 in expenditures. The 2020 ending year balance is expected to be $348,825. The solid waste fund is starting the year with $107,150. The expected revenues are $315,651. Expenditures are anticipated to be $335,662.
This budget includes two new School Resource Officers for the Wahluke School District, one new law enforcement position and partial funding for a utility officer, as well as raises and equipment for the police department. The Public Works department also is getting a new position.
In other business, the council passed an amendment to the 2019 budget. They also approved the purchase of an ultraviolet intensity sensor for the wastewater treatment plant.

Othello looking for donations for annual Christmas baskets
OTHELLO — About 45 years ago, four volunteer firefighters decided to make Christmas food and gift baskets and give them to seven families who needed some extra help. The next year, they gave baskets to more families. In the years since, the Othello Community Christmas Baskets has become a city-wide event with various groups raising money, food, warm clothes and toys for Othello families in need.
