Dec. 26, 1969 – RITES FOR W.C. HAYDEN

A great many paid their last respects to Dr. Wilbur C. Hayden Saturday when services were conducted at the Moon Chapel by Rev. John Morgan of St. Pius X Church, Coeur d’Alene.

Dr. Hayden was 64, well known in the county’s medical community and a close friend to many. He came to Sandpoint in 1946 after 5 years of active duty in the South Pacific Theater in World War II. He practiced medicine here until ill health caused him to retire from active practice last year.

BELWOOD SIGNS FOR EXTRA DUTY

SP/5 Ernest C. Belwood Jr., son of the Chet Belwoods, is home on a 40 day leave. He then will go back to Vietnam for another six months. His year was up Oct. 9, but he signed up for six extra months. He says Vietnam is a beautiful country with wonderful beaches, but the good old U.S.A. and mostly Idaho sure looks good to him.

AWARDED COMBAT INFANTRYMAN BADGE

The Combat Infantryman Badge was awarded to Army Private First Class Clifford A. Perry near Pleiku, Vietnam. The 20-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Perry, Rt. 1, Samuels, and a SHS graduate, Pvt. Perry joined the Army in March 1968 and completed basic training at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

VOLUNTARY CURTAILMENT OF VISITS

While there is no flu epidemic in Sandpoint as yet, as a precaution Bonner General Hospital is asking visitors other than family to refrain from seeing hospital patients unless necessary.

Pend d’Oreille Review

Dec. 26, 1919 – NO CHRISTMAS ARRESTS

Tom and Jerry’s forced loafing on the job resulted in zero marked at the jails today, with no Christmas arrests for drunkenness. In the “good old days” of John Barleycorn, that never occurred.

CHRISTMAS BONUSES

Christmas bonuses were given employes (sic) by several local concerns. The Western Cedar Pole Preserver co. gave employes of a year or more, a month’s salary, $50 to those with nine months, $25 for six months and $15 to the three months or less men. At the Pend d’Oreille creamery all employes received cash bonuses, a turkey and two bricks of ice cream.

SALUBRIOUS CHRISTMAS DAY

Our Christmas weather would have done Los Angeles proud. With no snow on the ground, the warm spell continues. It is the “opennest” Christmas we have enjoyed in many years.

ELKS INITIATE LARGE CLASS

Saturday was “Elks night,” and brought many fawns and Bills from neighboring areas. A class of 21 got the opportunity to know what it means to become an Elk. Fully 300 attended the banquet.
