A 30-year-old occupant of a Coeur d’Alene resident home was jailed on Christmas Day after chasing caregivers with a saber and baseball bat.

Kyle E. Popejoy is being held in jail without bond and awaiting a mental health evaluation.

Popejoy, a resident of the Ambitions of Idaho resident care facility on the 1100 block of East Adeline Avenue, is accused of attacking a female caregiver with a sword and breaking the windows of vehicles with a baseball bat.

He’s charged with three felonies including two counts of aggravated assault and aggravated battery, and two misdemeanor malicious injury to property charges.

Employees of the small home in a residential neighborhood near 15th Street told police that Popejoy, who is diagnosed as schizophrenic, was upset because his relatives did not visit him for Christmas.

He allegedly broke into a closet that contained the bat, saber and a butterfly knife. A worker who tried to deny Popejoy access to the locked closet was struck with a piece of wood before fleeing the residence, according to a report.

Popejoy allegedly armed himself with the long blade and using the bat like a club pummeled the vehicles of workers who had fled.

When police arrived around 3 p.m., they found one of the home’s occupants lying in the front yard, curled into a ball and shaking.

“He appeared to be scared,” a Coeur d’Alene Police officer wrote in a report. “His speech was rapid and his voice was shaky.”

The man was uninjured.

Popejoy allegedly chased another caregiver for more than a block. She slipped under a neighbor’s fence and called police. At one time during the incident, Popejoy attempted to start a chain saw, but was unsuccessful, police said. He pummeled to the ground a female worker who tried to prevent Popejoy from leaving the residence.

After Popejoy was detained, he tried to escape from a patrol car, police said. Police recovered the saber, which had a broken point, the bat and knife.

At a Thursday appearance in First District Magistrate Court, Judge Mayli Walsh said she wouldn’t set bail in the case until Popejoy had adequate time with counsel.

“I do not believe Mr. Popejoy understands his rights,” the judge said.

A motion filed Friday asked the court to direct the Department of Health and Welfare to assign a psychiatrist or psychologist to the case to prepare a mental health evaluation.
