RICHLAND — With only 13 wrestlers in tow and 11 possible scorers, Moses Lake placed fourth at the Hanford Winter Cup.
Moses Lake’s 148.5 points trailed only tournament champion Chiawana (221.5), Sunnyside (187.5) and Mt. Spokane (155).
“In my opinion, it was solid showing,” head coach Jaime Garza said.
Jonathan Tanguma heads into Moses Lake’s two-week break from tournament competition with first-place trophies from the Tri-State Tournament and now the Hanford Winter Cup. Tanguma outlasted Oscar Alvarez of Granger 5-4 in the semifinals before accepting an injury forfeit from Alejandro Fernandez of Sunnyside; Alvarez is currently the top-ranked 113-pound wrestler in Class 1A.
Hunter White picked up another win against Sunnyside’s Fabian Ortega en route to second place in 132 pounds. White was pinned by Andrew Macias of Sunnyside in the finals.
“He’s (White) shown a lot of consistency throughout the year,” Garza said.
Although he took fifth place due to the tournament’s format, Saul Salinas went 4-1 on the mat. Ryan Grubb and Cruz Vasquez both placed third in 126 and 160 pounds, respectively. Grubb fell to Abel Nava of Granger — ranked first in 1A — by a major decision, 14-0, in the semifinals before rallying to beat Ethan Hull of Reardan 10-3 for third.
Vasquez was tripped up in the semifinals by Pasco’s Isaiah Gonzalez 9-1 and then beat Granger’s Diego Isiordia 3-0.
Maximus Zamora lost tight matches to three-time state finalist Robby Vaughn of Chiawana in the semifinals 11-7 and Austin Villanueva of Sunnyside 8-6 in the consolation finals to finish fourth.
