BONNERS FERRY — A fatal accident occurred on U.S. 95, milepost 529, approximately nine miles south of Eastport, on Dec. 31 at 4:26 p.m., blocking the highway for about five hours.

According to a press release from Idaho State Police (ISP), a red and gray 1996 Mercury Sable, driven by Shawn M. Russell, 40, of Bonners Ferry, was traveling southbound, before leaving the right shoulder and striking a power pole.

Hall Mountain Fire, Boundary County Extrication, Boundary Ambulance, Idaho State Police, and Boundary County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the scene through treacherous road conditions due to the snow.

Northern Lights was called to the scene to turn off the power, due to power lines on the vehicle, so first responders could safely reach the car. They also had to repair the broken power pole.

According to ISP, Russell, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident is currently under investigation.
