St. Maries girls win district opener

DEARY — St. Maries opened a double-digit lead in the first quarter, then rolled to a 47-14 win over Orofino in their 2A District 1-2 tournament opener on Monday night at Deary High School.

“The girls played well,” Lumberjacks coach John Cordell said. “Ten of our girls scored tonight, which is outstanding.”

St. Maries, which shot 20-for-42 from the floor, was led by Madison Cordell and MacKenzie Hammond, who scored eight points each. Cordell had seven assists and three rebounds, while Kaci Haeg contributed four rebounds, five steals and two blocks.

Brigid Hill led the Maniacs with 5 points.

The Lumberjacks (12-8) advance to face top-seeded Grangeville in a best-of-3 championship series, with the winners going to the 2A state tournament. The first Lumberjacks-Bulldogs matchup is at 6 tonight at Genesee High School.

COEUR d’ALENE — Moscow survived the 4A IEL loser-out game, as junior forward Rheanna Anderson scored 14 points to lead the Bears past the Bulldogs at North Idaho College.

Both teams ended with 26 rebounds and 13 turnovers in an evenly-matched playoff opener. Before Moscow took a six-point lead late in the fourth quarter, there were 11 lead changes, three ties and no team had led by more than four points.

Trailing 26-24 heading into the fourth, Moscow snapped out of its funk and opened the quarter on an 8-0 run.

Sandpoint sophomore forward Hattie Larson set the tone early by attacking the basket and cleaning up on the defensive glass. Larson finished with a game-high 16 points, nine rebounds, three steals and a block. The Bulldogs finished 5-15.

The Bears (8-13) advance to face top-seeded Lakeland (8-11) at 6 tonight at NIC. It is the first of a best-of-three championship series, with the winners advancing to the state 4A tournament.

COEUR d’ALENE — Trailing by two points after the first quarter, the host Royals piled up 23 points in the second period to take command in their final regular-season game of the season.

Imelda Bresee tallied 26 points and 17 rebounds to lead North Idaho Christian, Sarah Hines had 10 points and five assists, and Riley Anderson added 11 assists for the Royals.

Grace Netjes led The Oaks, which finished third in the girls Mountain Christian League standings, with 16 points.

NICS (19-5 overall, 12-2 MCL) begins play in the league tournament at 11 a.m. Friday, facing Kootenai Thunder in Pullman, Wash.
