MOSCOW — Idaho’s football program signed 10 future student-athletes to national letters of intent or financial aid agreements Wednesday, on the first day of the 2019 regular signing period, Vandals coach Paul Petrino announced. The Vandals inked eight high school seniors and two FBS transfers who will be eligible to compete immediately.
The group of 10 future Vandals joins 15 football student-athletes who put pen to paper during the early signing period, including nine who are already enrolled for the spring semester.
“If this isn’t our best class we’ve signed here, it’s definitely one of the best classes we’ve put together,” Petrino said. “The assistant coaches did a great job of filling our needs and adding a couple of just really good players. They should all work right now like they’re going to help right away. If they’re ready to play, we’re going to play them.”
Wednesday’s addition to the class includes two sets of brothers and another pair of high school teammates.
Brothers Kayode and Mujeeb Rufai both signed with Idaho as transfers from Boise State. Kayode, a defensive end who appeared in 19 games for the Broncos, will arrive as a redshirt junior with two years of eligibility remaining. Mujeeb redshirted in 2018, his first season in Boise. The defensive back will have four years remaining.
Twins and three-star prospects Hayden and Hogan Hatten of Saguaro High in Scottsdale, Ariz. were two of five Idaho signees from the state of Arizona.
Two more, David Eppinger and Daseau Puffer, were teammates at Chandler High in Chandler, Ariz. Premier Region Defensive Player of the Year Sully Shannon (Phoenix/Brophy Prep) rounded out the Arizona contingent.
Idaho landed in-state wide receiver Nehemiah Parker from Mountain Home High. Parker was a second-team all-state selection as a senior.
The Vandals also locked up two high school standouts from eastern Washington in offensive lineman Josh Guzik (Rogers High) and Jack Schuster (Richland High).
Washington State: The Cougars added two players to its signing class on Wednesday — Jimmy Price, an offensive lineman from Tyler, Texas; and Nicholas Sheetz, a defensive lineman from Greenwood, S.C.
Boise State: The Broncos signed three players, to go with the 15 (which included two quarterbacks) they signed in December.
According to national recruiting sites, the Broncos signed five four-star prospects and 12 with three-star ratings.
Eastern Washington: The Eagles announced the signing of nine players, to go with the nine they signed in December.
EWU also announced the addition of linebacker Ty Graham, a Cheney High grad who played the last three seasons at Idaho.
“We tried to get him to stay in town four years ago and it took us four years to get it done,” Eastern coach Aaron Best said. “His addition gives us much-needed veteran leadership at that position. He comes from a great football family. His father (John) coached here and at Central Washington for many years and his brother played at Montana Tech and Central Washington. Football is something they understand, and we recruited him out of high school as a linebacker. He played against us this past year and was somebody we had to game plan for. He knows where he needs to be and is efficient with his movements because of his football intelligence and his off-the-field study. He’s eager to get going and has already been in many film sessions by himself to be ready to play when that day comes.”
While playing from 2016-18 for the Vandals, Graham had 133 tackles, including 13 for a loss. He had 2 1/2 sacks, an interception, two passes broken up and a forced fumble in 27 career games. As a junior in 2018 he had 65 tackles, including 12 in 38-14 loss at EWU at Roos Field on Oct. 27. He had 28 tackles as a sophomore and 40 as a true freshman in 2016.
Idaho State: Between the December and February signing periods, the Bengals added 24 players to its recruiting class.
Rob Phenicie and his staff brought in eight from the state of California, seven from Idaho, three from Nevada and Washington, two from Utah and one from Oregon.
