SANDPOINT — A preliminary hearing is set for a Clark Fork woman accused of ransacking the rural home of actor, writer and director Viggo Mortensen in 2017.

Sharyl Ann Hoskins is charged with grand theft. A hearing to determine if there’s enough evidence to justify a trial on the felony charge is scheduled for Wednesday in Bonner County Magistrate Court.

Hoskins, 51, is free on a $1,000 surety bond while the case is pending.

The caretaker of Mortensen’s home told deputies in May 2017 that he left the property and was gone all day. Upon his return, he discovered smashed up dinnerware, overturned furniture and missing property. Two .22-caliber rifles, a 12-gauge shotgun, 25 pocketknives, 20 antler sheds, four whitetail deer skulls and other property were reportedly taken, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Hoskins was identified as a suspect because Mortensen had recently purchased items at an estate sale held by the Hoskins family, court records indicate.

Hoskins was confronted with the allegations and allegedly confessed to taking the items. She reportedly told the deputy that she “lost control of herself,” the affidavit said.

Preliminary hearings in the case have been repeatedly postponed, although it was not clear from available online court records why.

Mortensen, who is also a musician, author and artist, has scores of film credits to his name including, “The Road,” “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and “Carlito’s Way.”
