Bronze Star awarded

1st Lt. Miles Hauriz, Transportation Corps, U.S. Army, stationed in Iraq, received a Bronze Star on Jan. 31, 2009, for Meritorious Service while stationed in Iraq. His parents are Kim R. and Jean Hauritz of Priest River.

There is the potentiality for rioting, looting, and general chaos when the clock strikes the midnight hour this year. With the electricity possibly off, security systems inoperable and a demand for resources, the Y2K problem could affect all of society. Law enforcement is also planning for the Y2K event.

New gym motivates Spartans

Saturday night the Spartan basketball team took advantage of the chance to play on their new court this season and defeated the Lakeland Hawks in Intermountain League play 47-46, and locked up second place in the IML with a 6-3 record.

The District Five office of Idaho Division of Highways requested that the traveling public drive with additional care and attention during the current breakup of area highways. Motorists are particularly cautioned to be on the alert for pot holes and water on the roadway.

Bishop’s Marina purchased

Mr. and Mrs. John Dialogue, formerly of Los Angeles, have purchased Bishop’s Marina at Coolin from Mr. and Mrs. Russell Bishop, who purchased the marina from the Art Moore estate in 1953 and have added buildings and equipment to the operation since that time.

Lamanna feted on Founders Day

“This is your life,” with Mike Lamanna as the central character, formed the unique entertainment at the Parent-Teacher meeting Monday evening. Superintendent Lamanna was escorted to the stage by Mrs. Wayne Phillips where he was given the seat of honor. Those presented as the story of his life was unfolded were Earle Clintsman, Ed Saccomanno, Mrs. Lamanna and six Lamanna children, Rodney Larson, Richie Naccarato, and Wayne Phillips. Mrs. Jack Fuher, PTA president, presented a gift to Mr. Lamanna at the program’s conclusion.

Pulp mill rumor false

Diamond Gardner Corporation might establish a pulp and paper mill in northern Idaho eventually, but not in the immediate future. “I can probably explain how such a rumor started,” said Leo Bodine, a company vice president. “We bought 300 acres of land at Laclede for possible relocation of our mill at Albeni Falls. Relocation is being studied because our log storage area at the present site has been reduced from up to 14 million board feet to about 4 million… We need more room.”

Social Security records books free

The New World Life Insurance Company through their agent Robert Dow have for distribution a Social Security record book, available for free from Mr. Dow’s office. The book is of a convenient pocket size and contains the Social Security law and anything one might want to know about the setup. Space is provided for your monthly earnings for a period of several years, the amount of benefits you should receive, and much other valuable information.

People’s Market to be located in new building

People’s Market, Hill and Robinson, will be located in their new quarters in the Wright Building on Feb. 24. The building has been undergoing various changes. The display window and meat room are now visible from the street. It takes on the appearance of a market that would only be found in cities much larger than Priest River.

100 Years Ago — 1919

Nordman road

to be completed

More than a year ago, the board of commissioners applied to the Kaniksu forest service for assistance in the construction of the West Branch road and were advised to wait until after the war. Now that the war is over, it is likely the road will be completed. It connects Nordman to the Nickel Plate Mine.

Peter Young has started construction of a brick garage for Stanley Jones on the lot he recently purchased opposite the Congregational church.
