Super Hero’s and Princesses gathered at the Alberton Elementary School on Saturday for a little tea party with games and entertainment. The program was hosted by the Alberton Afterschool Program, the PEAK Foundation and with funding from the Headwaters Foundation.
“It’s a way to build a bridge between the home, school and community,” said Jesse Mauer, who coordinates the Afterschool Program. The kids were encouraged to wear their favorite super hero or princess costume. If they didn’t have one, costumes were available for dress up.
Jesse’s son Isaac dressed up as Batman and helped the kids with activities along with several other high school students and parents who helped out. Princesses could make a bejeweled crown and Super Heroes made beaded bracelets with their favorite super hero colors. There were plenty of games including “Kiss the Frog;” bows and arrows (with spongy tips, of course); balancing a book on their heads and curtsy; an obstacle course; and crashing a cardboard brick wall.
“It’s a great thing to do on cold, Saturday afternoon,” said Alberton Mayor John Bigart III.
While the audience snacked on treats, the “Ice Sisters,” out of Missoula, performed with songs and a skit. The sponsor groups try to hold family fun activities several times a year. The last activity they did together was a Halloween carnival and haunted house last October.
“It’s fun to dress up and play,” Jesse said. “It promotes community resilience where families can engage with a low-cost activity outside their home and it helps to bring everybody together.”
She also wanted to thank all the community members, parents and high school students who helped out with the event.

Mineral County sends tax bill to Forest Service
The Forest Service will be receiving a property tax bill from Mineral County this year. County Commissioners Laurie Johnston, Roman Zylawy and Duane Simons signed the letter March 9 requesting property tax revenue for 2017. The “historic letter” as defined by Rep. Denley Loge, describes the plight Mineral County is facing as options to fund the county have dried up.
Colorado woman dies after vehicle gets stuck
An early evening call received by Mineral County dispatch on Friday, March 17, ended in tragedy. The body of Colorado resident Debra Ann Koziel was found in the Fish Creek area by a search team the following Tuesday afternoon. Her death was determined to be the result of exposure to weather.
No major flooding as snow thaws
“As the ground starts thawing, the rocks start falling,” was a post made on the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page last week. A photo accompanied the post of a big rock which had come down on Mullan Road East near the Big Eddy fishing access in Superior on March 11. “Please be aware of your surroundings and pay attention while driving,” they warned in the post.
