CF wrestlers busy at Ronan Duals; Lady Cats top Victor

The 50th annual Dave Edington Western Montana Duals were held in Ronan on Jan. 4 and 5 where wrestlers from 19 teams participated, including the Clark Fork Mountain Cats (CF), Plains/Hot Springs, Polson, Corvallis, Glacier, Columbia Falls, Hamilton, Stevensville, Frenchtown and Townsend.
Teams participated in several rounds of “pool duals” with Clark Fork pitted against Plains/Hot Springs where the Savage Horsemen won, 21-15. Results of matches were: 138 pounds, Conrad Vanderwall (PHS) dec. Hunter Haskins, 10-3; 145, Josiah Vanderwall (PHS) p. Isaiah Kovalsky (CF), 3:08; 152, Bert DeTienne (PHS), p. Silas Acker (CF), 3:20; 160, Kyler Francis (CF), dec. Jessie Uski (PHS), 7-1; 182, Trey Green (CF) won by forfeit; and hwt, Jacob Lapinski (CF) p. Steven Yother, :12.
In the round against Stevensville, Clark Fork won by criteria. Dual results: Haskins (CF) p. Aaron Springer (STE), 2:46; Kovalsky (CF) p. Tristan Riel (STE), 1:03; Silas Acker (CF) won by forfeit; Kyler Francis (CF) p. Dylan James (STE), :53; Trey Green (CF) p. Sebastian Driver (STE), 1:20; and Lapinski (CF) p. Jake Woods (STE), 4:43.
In Round 4, Clark Fork was edged by Corvallis, 30-26. Results: Triston Davis (COR) p. Haskins (CF), 1:27; Kovalsky (CF) p. Randon Weidow, (COR) 3:03; Derrick Gasvoda (COR) p. Acker (CF), :50; and Lapinski (CF) p. Harley Wise (COR), 1:47.
Round 6 saw the Mountain Cats defeated by Ronan, 36-24. Results: Zane Walchuk (RON) p. Haskins (CF), 4:43; Kovalsky (CF) p. Manny Rowan (RON), :31; Daniel Bishop (RON) p. Acker (CF), 2:55; Francis (CF) p. Christian Smith (COR), 1:11; Green (CF) p. Jamison Webster (RON), :55; amd Lapinski (CF) p. Lars Sorrell (RON), 3:20.
Clark Fork wrestlers were to host Plains/Hot Springs, Arlee and Thompson Falls in the Superior Mixer on Tuesday, Jan. 8. The Mountain Cats will then gear up for the Rocky Mountain Classic this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 11 and 12 at Sentinel High School in Missoula.
Basketball
St. Regis teams take double hit from Plains
Last Thursday, Jan. 3, St. Regis faced Plains at home with a hard-fought basketball loss for the boys, 57-49. The Tigers were ahead against the Horsemen at the half, 23-18. By the end of the third quarter, Plains caught up with the teams at 33 points each. By the end of the fourth quarter, the Horsemen galloped into the lead with the final score of 57-49.
Ian Farris led the Tigers with 12 points, followed by Nicholas Day with nine; Tanner Day, seven; Andrew Sanford, Caleb Ball and Adam Ball, six each; and James Booker, four.
The St. Regis Lady Tigers also took a loss to Plains with a close game, 38-33. The Tigers led by two at the half, 16-14 but like the boys’ game, Plains rallied in the third to tie at 27-all. The Trotters then managed to get an edge in the fourth quarter and topped the Tigers by five.
Kylee Thompson paced St. Regis wth 14 points, and Maddison Kelly added 10.
Lady Mountain Cats send Pirates down plank
The Clark Fork Lady Mountain Cats won their battle against Victor on Thursday, 69-32. The Cats put a substantial lead in between themselves and the Pirates with a halftime score of 38-16. By the fourth quarter, they barely allowed the Pirates to get to the hoop — putting up 17 points to the Pirates’ five for the easy win.
Sorren Reese led the Cats with 20 points, followed by Zoey Kelsey with 12. Both Emma Baughman and Madison Mask nine; Darby Haskins, six; Sophie Krutilla, four; Cassie Green, three; and Molly Patko and Margaret Parkin, two each.
