Simultaneous emergency calls went out the morning of Wednesday, Jan. 16 — causing crews with the Superior Volunteer Fire Department to jump into action.

The first call came in as a fire, according to assistant fire chief Calvin Berry, but what they quickly realized was that it was smoke coming from a white pickup truck located down Interstate 90.

The truck hit a semi-truck trailer near Mile Marker 47 in the eastbound near Superior. The semi was just getting onto the highway and had its lights flashing as it gained speed. Berry reported that the driver of the pickup truck said the early morning sun had hit his eyes and he didn’t see the slow-moving semi and hit it straight-on. His truck then flipped onto its side and slid several feet down the road.

The front end of the pickup was completely destroyed, but the driver walked away. Berry was surprised he did not sustain serious injury. A Frenchtown ambulance just happened to be in the area after dropping off a patient at Mineral Community Hospital and stopped immediately to help the man who only had minor injuries. Superior ambulance showed up shortly after and took the man to Mineral Community Hospital for treatment.

Montana Highway Patrol and law enforcement were also at the scene. The semi-truck driver was not injured in the incident.
