ROYAL CITY — Royal City is in beginning stages of building a new library. The Royal City council discussed the second library in a recent meeting, which was just one of a few meetings that are being held in conjunction with Washington State University professor Bob Krikac and a team of students. The final meeting will be held on July 15 at 3:30 p.m. at the Royal City Golf Course.

During the first meeting, the WSU team made a list of the things that Royal City residents would like to have in a library. The team took that list and created a building concept and that drawing was shown during the second meeting. Using the same designs, the team evaluated the two properties being considered for the new building.

“I thought it was a great meeting,” said Royal City Finance Director Shilo Christensen. “It didn’t have great attendance. I think we’re moving in the right direction. It might take a while to get there.”

Building could start next year if the city is able to secure funding.

Also during the council meeting, Royal City Police Department Chief Darin Smith told that council the department may hit 300 police calls by the end of the year. At the time of last week’s meeting, the city was at 157 calls for the year.

John Lasen, Royal City’s public works director, reported that Avista was done replacing power poles that were compromised by the Highway 243 fire. They have offered to hydro seed the unimproved park property. Lasen asked them to hold off until Summerfest is over. Lasen also reported that the UV system project should be started up the first part of August.
