A Kalispell man is in the Flathead County Jail after police alleged he shot another man during a dispute last week.

Matthew David Smith, 40, of Whitefish, is facing one count of attempted deliberate homicide after the Kalispell Police Department said he shot 33-year-old Tristian Caswell Friday evening.

Caswell, a Kalispell man, had been shot in the chest and had life-threatening injuries.

Smith is currently being held in the Flathead County Jail.

According to police logs, the person who called 911 said there was a scuffle between the two men, and that the victim allegedly “attacked” and ripped the shooter off a motorcycle.

The victim was transported to Kalispell Regional Medical Center and was in critical condition.

The shooting remains under investigation.
