Hearing is postponed in battery case

SANDPOINT — A preliminary hearing was postponed Wednesday for a young Bonner County woman accused of attacking a teen with a baseball bat earlier this month.
Bonner County Deputy Prosecutor Nick Lapire said the hearing was reset for two weeks due to the recent appointment of defense counsel in Caitlyn Grace Haskins’ case.
Haskins, 18, is free on a $50,000 surety bond while the aggravated battery charge is pending against her, court records show.
The teen told Sandpoint Police she was attacked after exiting her vehicle at City Beach on July 2, according to court documents. A 17-year-old girl whose name is redacted from court records due to her age, allegedly punched the teen and threw her to the ground. While the teen was prostrate, Haskins is accused of hitting her in the head with the bat.
The teen reportedly underwent facial reconstruction surgery after suffering a broken eye socket, shattered cheek bone and a caved-in sinus cavity, according to posts the teen’s mother put onto social media.
Haskins’ mother said her daughter was breaking up a fight with the two teens.
The case became grist for the mill of social media, with some defending Haskins and others castigating her and reposting unflattering pictures of her holding marijuana buds and alcohol in response to statements by Haskins’ mother that her daughter is a good girl who didn’t drink or use drugs.
Both sides of the dispute are trying to make hay with a post the 17-year-old made on Instagram in which she admits attacking the teen for sending her boyfriend unsolicited text messages and pictures.
The 17-year-old is being prosecuted for battery at the misdemeanor level, although her case remains under seal because she has not reached the age of majority.
