Expect delays during chip seal project

Drivers in the cities of Hayden, Dalton Gardens and Coeur d’Alene will need to keep their feet on their brakes and their eyes on the road for the next few weeks.
Beginning Monday, road closures are expected in Kootenai County as the three cities have partnered for a summer chip seal project.
The chip seal will preserve existing roadways by sealing the road substructure from water and providing a renewed driving surface. Once the road is chip sealed, crews will then begin fog sealing.
During the chip seal process, traffic restrictions will be put in place.
The cities are asking drivers in the area to turn carefully and keep speeds very low on the new chip seal as it cures.
Road oils may get on shoes as individuals enter businesses or homes, and the slick substance can get on cars if drivers disregard traffic control signs or flaggers. Parked vehicles in the roadway could also see oil residue. Workers will sweep the road during the night to allow the oil to set in cool temperatures, but prior to being swept, the road will seem gravelly. Low speeds are required.
Stores on affected roads are being asked to turn off irrigation by midnight prior to the sealing, as water damages the seals. Irrigation can resume two hours after the chip seal and fog seal are completed.
