Former Royal City student earns scholarship

SEATTLE -— A former Royal City student has been awarded a scholarship from the Lynden Memorial Scholarship program, according to a press release on July 10.
Kay Lester is receiving the $2,500 scholarship for the 2019-2020 school year. The graduate of Royal High School will be attending her second year at Central Washington University this fall. She is studying law and justice.
“She was recently on the Dean’s List for academic performance, and participates in Cross Country and Track and Field,” stated the press release.
“Lynden offers these scholarships to children and grandchildren of our employees,” Gail Knapp, director of the scholarship fund and coordinator for Lynden, said in the press release. “This year’s scholarship winners are very accomplished students and community leaders. On behalf of all our employees, we congratulate Kay and wish her the best of luck with her future studies.”
Lynden is a family of transportation companies, with offices in Anchorage and Seattle.

OTHELLO — About 45 years ago, four volunteer firefighters decided to make Christmas food and gift baskets and give them to seven families who needed some extra help. The next year, they gave baskets to more families. In the years since, the Othello Community Christmas Baskets has become a city-wide event with various groups raising money, food, warm clothes and toys for Othello families in need.
