Fire burns two sections

The fire that was raging last week on section 28 about 8 miles north of town has been practically brought to a standstill after spreading to over two sections in the area. About 100 men were rushed to the scene. Much valuable timber was consumed and many poles and posts on Humbird and state land.

90 Years Ago — 1929

Honest thieves

Running out of gas at the top of the schoolhouse hill and coasting into town at 2 a.m. Sunday morning was the reason for the breaking of the lock on the gasoline pump at Burgan’s. Parties from Spokane returned this week and paid for the pump repairs and the gasoline taken.

80 Years Ago — 1939

Business news

The Log Cabin, which is again being operated by its owner Philip Naccarato for the past two weeks, has been undergoing renovations. Walls are being repaneled, and in the center of the room will be a water fountain and there will also be a fireplace. A modern lunch counter is also planned.

William Booher of the Bungalow Inn states that he expects to start construction of a nine hole golf course on his holdings to the west of town.

70 Years Ago — 1949

War memorial planned

At the Kiwanis Club meeting the War Memorial for those who lost their lives in WW2 was discussed. It will be a bronze plaque engraved with their names, set in a cement pillar, either on the high school grounds or at city hall.

60 Years Ago — 1959

State patrolman on duty

State Patrolman Duane Sorenson took over his duties in the Priest River area the first of the month. He is the first patrolman to be assigned to Priest River. Prior to this, only one state patrolman, stationed in Sandpoint, was on duty in Bonner County.

50 Years Ago — 1969

Careless fisherman causes fire

A man-caused forest fire burned .6 of an acre on Two Mouth Creek at Priest Lake Sunday before it was controlled by eight men from P.L.T.P. A. (Priest Lake Timber Protective Association) headquarters and 1200 gallons of retardant. It was the third fire for the Priest Lake area this summer.

Priest River Glass opens

Although they’ve unofficially been open for about a month, Priest River Glass partners John Connolly and Ray Saccomanno will celebrate their grand opening Monday.

30 Years Ago — 1989

Centennial packets read

The first 100 people to put down $25 will be the lucky recipients of a commemorative T-shirt and mug with official city centennial logos. Also included are a centennial certificate sighed by Mayor Whitey Brower, a $1 discount coupon to the centennial dinner, and a city centennial button.

Off and running

The new school district has had a busy summer getting ready for students to swing through the doors on Sept. 1. The district office staff has set up quarters in the Rivertown Mall and has been busy remodeling the facility.

Must restore wetlands

Bonner County resident Jack Barron must remove fill material and restore wetlands and stream channels on his property near Nordman, according to an order issued by the Environmental Protection Agency.
