Honorary street name had to overcome many hurdles

Last October when John Elsa told me he was going to propose to the city that Ontario between Boyer and Ella be named “Jerry Kramer Way” in honor of Kramer’s induction into the National Football Hall of Fame, I thought it was a nice tribute to one of Sandpoint’s own (Sandpoint High School, class of 1954). The city attorney suggested making it an honorary title rather than a permanent street name change which was an excellent suggestion because it saved people from having to change their mailing address if they were impacted by the change.

Many road blocks had to be hurdled but John persevered and ultimately approval was granted. Perhaps little known is the fact that approval is only for five years and if the sign is stolen or damaged, it is John Elsa who must pay to replace it.

I’m sure Jerry and all of the Kramer family is appreciative of your efforts, John. And I know the DayBreak Center must be very happy to have benefitted from the funds you have so generously raised on their behalf over the years.
