It is difficult to capture an event as broad-ranging and active as Plains Days in words. Throughout the community, from the fields to the streets, the gym to the golf course, the corners to the clouds, Plains abounded with laughter, good sportsmanship, generosity, athleticism, kindness, volunteerism, and fun.

Competitions from football and basketball to turtle races brought out cheering fans. Dunk tank volunteers heckled softball throwers from their perch until someone silenced them by hitting the target. Pilots volunteered their planes, fuel, time and expertise to take all comers for a view of their home from the heavens, and a chance to feel their hands on the controls, possibly imagining themselves as pilots in the future. Meanwhile, the past was honored as well, as folks toured the old jail and schoolhouse, marveling at the simplicity and starkness of a single metal cell or an old blackboard.

Many activities raised funds for local organizations to carry on their good works, such as the sports complex and the VFW. Others were just giving back, such as the free ice cream social at the bank.

The parade brought out flag-waving crowds to cheer for local emergency service volunteers and floats from go-karts to rafts, fine horses to classic cars, 4-H and dancers, giant art supplies and midget patrols with giant men.

Plains shone last weekend.
