SANDPOINT — A Spirit Lake man accused of dousing a Bonner County man with boiling water is pleading not guilty.

Brandon Frank Hankey’s plea clears the way for a two-day jury trial in 1st District Court in October. Hankey is charged with aggravated assault in connection with the April 26 incident at the Mount Baldy Apartment complex in Ponderay.

The alleged victim suffered first- and second-degree burns on his chest, arms and back, according to court documents. He told Ponderay Police he had a disagreement with Hankey the night before and awoke to the heated water being poured onto him, an arrest report said.

The nature of the disagreement is not specified in court documents.

Hankey, 27, is free on $10,000 surety bond while the case is pending.

The charge against Hankey has been amended downward from felony battery to felony assault, court records show.

Hankey waived his right to a preliminary hearing in the case, which advanced it to district court for further proceedings.
