The Troy Library held the second Annual Barbecue and Book Sale June 7, inviting community members to browse books and a silent auction, and giving children a chance to build rockets and color a large rocket ship.
The rockets were in line with the “A Universe of Stories” theme of the Lincoln Public Library’s summer reading program.
Troy Librarian Sharee Miller said that by the afternoon, they already had 10 children sign up for the summer reading program.
The craft table, where children assembled their own rockets, is a regular feature, Miller said. She regularly changes out the crafts children can do.
Past crafts have included basket weaving for Easter and a bird feeder earlier in the spring.
Even in the age of electronic devices, Miller said it’s not that hard to get children interested in hands-on activities, especially if they see other children involved.
The event raised $598 for the library, according to Miller. A raffle for a solar oven raised $280, the book sale raised $196, the silent auction raised $65, and individual donations at the barbecue raised $57.
The Troy Library is open six days a week from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
