Roy Austin Johnson, 89, passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2019, at his home on Jewel Lake Road in Sagle, Idaho.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 24, 2019, at the Seneacquoteen Cemetery with military honors.

Roy was born on September 23, 1929, in Wildrose, North Dakota, to Olaf and Magnhild Johansen. He grew up on the family homestead in Sawyer, Idaho.

Roy enlisted in the United States Navy at age 17. He was honorably discharged in 1981 after serving four tours during the Korean War and receiving two Bronze Stars, a Silver Star and a Purple Heart.

While stationed in Long Beach, California, Roy met the love of his life, Alexis, at a carnival at an area downtown called The Pike. Roy kept running his bumper car into hers, trying to get her to talk to him. Later that evening, he told her, “You don’t know it yet, but you’re gonna marry me!” Roy married Alexis Jones on January 22, 1954, in South Carolina. They made their home in Santa Ana, California, where Roy was a truck driver and later worked as a mechanic. In 1994 they retired and moved home to Sawyer, Idaho.

He enjoyed fishing, leather tooling and working in his shop.

He is survived by his daughter, Delyce (Chuck) Sloan of Sagle; a sister, Joyce Crabb of Superior, Montana; two grandsons, Jason (Stacey) Sloan of Huntington Beach, California, and Kevin Sloan of San Antonio, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alexis; and nine siblings.

Lakeview Funeral Home in Sandpoint is handling the arrangements. Please visit Roy’s online memorial at lakeiviewfuneral.com and sign his guest book.
