“Donny” was born on May 11, 1940, to Mildred (Ashley) Scoggins and Donald Buren Scoggins. He was just shy of age 79 when the insidious disease of Alzheimer’s compassionately ended his life on April 30, 2019.

He was a good son, a loving brother, a devoted husband and a dedicated father. He was a “Westerner” and a family man through and through. Born in the Black Hills of South Dakota, he graduated from Black Hills State University with a degree in business. He met and married the love of his life, Mary Ann Nordstrom, in 1963. Despite himself he joined the Army, and true to self, he started a family of his own and had two sons, Anthony and Christopher, and moved to California. His family was his passion. He stayed close with his three sisters, Deanna, Marilyn and Nancy, throughout his life.

He worked for more than 30 years as a personnel director for the V.A. Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif., but “Pop’s” true passion was as a father and husband. Despite all California had to offer, including the Sierras, the Pacific Ocean and Bay Area culture, he yearned to get back to his simple roots and, upon retirement, he parlayed his hard work and bought land in Coeur d’Alene and built his dream home on a hill. So, with time and space to spare, he walked with his dog, rode his tractor and read his beloved Louis L’Amour books. But one woman made his life complete — Mary Ann. He lost her tragically in 2016 and never really recovered.

In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome a donation to the Audubon Society or a charity of your choice in Donny’s name.

We would also like to thank friends, family and caretakers who helped in Dad’s last few years.

We welcome everyone to a celebration of life gathering at his home at 1 p.m. on June 30, 2019.
