NWAC hoop tourney schedules announced

Pairings were announced Sunday for the upcoming Northwest Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, both 16-team events scheduled for Everett Community College.
The defending conference tourney champion North Idaho College men (27-2), the East Region champions, open Thursday at 10 a.m. vs. Clackamas (20-8), the fourth seed from the South Region.
The NIC women (20-8), the fourth seed from the East Region, open Saturday vs. either Lane (26-2) or Umpqua (24-4), the top seed from the South Region.
Championship games in both tourneys are scheduled for March 17.

NIC finishes with two wins in six games in Florida
CLERMONT, Fla. — North Idaho College blanked Macomb Community College 9-0 in five innings, then fell to Mercyhurst North East 5-4 in eight innings to complete their season-opening six-game stretch of games in the Sunshine State.
Against Macomb, Madi Mott pitched four innings of one-hit ball with eight strikeouts for NIC. Devinne Amesquita hit a two-run homer in the first inning for the Cardinals, and Taylor Anderson delivered a three-run double in the second.
In the second game, Tori Harding of Mercyhurst North East hit a three-run homer to tie NIC 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth, then the Saints scored on a wild pitch in the eighth to win the game.
Grace Ferres struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings for NIC.
NIC (2-4) is scheduled to open Northwest Athletic Conference play March 15 at home with a doubleheader vs. Walla Walla.
