COEUR d’ALENE — The chairman of the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee is being criticized for what a local political activist is calling blatantly bigoted messaging on his personal social media feed.

Teuvo Orjala, who says he is associated with the Indivisible Idaho chapter of the national Indivisible Project, chastised GOP chairman Brent Regan over several Facebook posts which Orjala says are homophobic, racist and demeaning of women and the Democratic Party.

In one post, an image shows the evolution of man through the ages, reaching a point where there appears to be a transgender woman. The evolutionary man turns his back on the woman and tells the others, “Go back, something has gone wrong.”

“For an elected official to be publishing something like that in the open is just amazing,” Orjala said. “No matter what our disagreements are about policy and politics here in North Idaho, I can’t believe we have reached a moment where a party chair can openly share homophobic content publicly and no one even notices.”

With a deeper dive into Brent Regan’s Facebook content, Orjala said, “You will find posts making fun of a woman’s appearance, calling (Democratic presidential candidate) Elizabeth Warren a monkey, saying Democratic women are like the KKK and it goes on and on.”

Regan took exception to allegations that he posted anything objectionable.

“If I had posted anything actually offensive, Facebook would have blocked it and put me in Facebook jail,” Regan said.

Orjala, meanwhile, said he’s airing his concerns to raise public awareness.

“I think it’s important to put public pressure on Brent and the Republican Party to say that things like this can’t be tolerated,” Orjala said. “If this is acceptable to our community, then why don’t we start teaching this in civics class to our kids? Because if we say and do nothing we basically are already.”

According to its website, the national Indivisible Project’s mission is to cultivate a grassroots movement to elect progressive leaders, realize bold progressive policies, rebuild democracy, and defeat the Trump agenda.
