March 7, 1969 — FREDSTROM AWARDED

Arbie Fredstrom, Sandpoint Motor Co. service manager, was awarded the position of secretary for Chevrolet Service Managers’ “Only the Best” Club for 1968. This is a great honor, gained only by a high degree of proficiency. Jack Parker and the other members of Sandpoint Motor Co. extend their heartfelt congratulations to Fredstrom for his efforts and achievement.

JAMBOREE RESERVATIONS START

The rush for motel reservations for the National Scout Jamboree has begun, and it may be greater than the ability to accommodate. Jamboree executives say they have tied up the Hupp, Diamond W, Travlers and North Shore during the Jamboree, leaving only a few motels in the area to handle the great demand.

HEAVY SNOW PACK

Water content of the snowpack on Schweitzer Basin snow courses continues above average, say Tom Wilson, Soil Conservation Service and Joe Peabody, Schweitzer ski patrol man. Snow depths at the 6100 ft. ridge level averaged 146 inches, with over 56 inches of water, the highest recorded this time of year since measurements began five years ago. Last year snow averaged 99 inches with 37.5 inches of water. The five year average for this course is 109 inches of snow with 41 inches of water.

March 7, 1919 — TOBACCO PRICES RAISE

Local merchants have received advices about the raise in tobacco prices, due to the increased federal tax. All smoking and chewing tobaccos have a raise of five cents per pound, and cigarettes five to ten cents a package.

HEAVY SNOW CAVES IN GARAGE

Charles Delisle’s new garage at Clarksfork caved in Sunday by reason of heavy snow on the roof. Two of the walls did not go down. Delisle and three other men were on the roof shoveling off snow when the crash came. Delisle went with the roof to the ground but was unhurt. Three or four cars were demolished. Work on rebuilding the garage began Monday.

ASSESS PICTURE SHOW WAR TAX

Manager Jack Gardner of the Gem announced today that owing to the increase in the cost of film service and the continuing advance in war taxes, the tax will now be assessed direct to theater patrons. There is a 20 per cent direct tax upon film theater tickers and in addition a 15 cents a day charge on films, and a $100 a year seat tax. On top of that, congress has just passed a measure by which film houses are further taxed 5 per cent on film rentals. Manager Gardner feels the local public will appreciate that the advance on prices is unavoidable.
