Sandpoint soccer senior Riley Walkington will take her talents to Cheney for the next stop in her career, but for the next few days, she’ll take her talents to Mexico.

Walkington, a four-year varsity letter-winner, three-time 4A Inland Empire League MVP and a two-time all-4A team selection, made the U.S. Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP)’s 18-woman roster that has been playing in Guadalajara, Mexico this week.

Unsurprisingly for anyone who has seen Walkington’s Sandpoint career, the midfielder has done a little bit of everything for the U.S. team through three games of action.

Walkington immediately proved herself by scoring the first of the ODP’s seven goals against Guadalajara University on Tuesday and hasn’t looked back. Since then, Walkington has assisted on three of the ODP’s 11 goals over the team’s past two wins.

Off the field, the U.S. ODP team has also done its fair share of sight-seeing. For Walkington, this means escaping the Idaho snow by watching a professional soccer game, taking tour and experiencing Mexican culture in the 90-degree heat.

The team will train today and will return to play on Saturday for its fourth game in five days.

Walkington made the West Region’s ODP roster by attending the team’s regional camp this past summer at Colorado State University. The West Region ODP’s roster includes representation from Idaho, Washington, Oregon, California, Utah, Colorado, Alaska, Hawaii, Wyoming, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and Montana.
