Pi Day serves up sweet SASi fundraiser

SANDPOINT — What is better than stuffing your face with pie on Pi Day? Shoving it in someone else’s face, of course.
The Sandpoint Area Seniors are once throwing a Pi Day celebration this year, and several community members — including all three Bonner County commissioners — have agreed to take pie in the face to help raise money for the seniors.
“It’s to raise money for our valuable programs, but it’s also about fun,” said Ellen Weissman, SASi executive director.
SASi is inviting the community to join the fun on Thursday and throw pies at the volunteers. The volunteers include county commissioners Dan MacDonald, Steve Bradshaw and Jeff Connolly, as well as Bryan Hult fro Bonner County Veterans Services, Nora Horn from Luther Park, Debbi Love from the Bonner Community Food Bank, Wayne Kern and Rick Myers from Life Care Center of Sandpoint, and Weissman herself. Marchelle Fritz from Life Care will serve as the master of ceremonies for the event.
Pi Day is celebrated each year on March 14 in recognition of the mathematical constant, defined at the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. While Pi has been calculated to more than a trillion digits past it’s decimal point, it is typically rounded out to 3.14 — hence why it is celebrated on the 14th day of the third month.
“I have always liked math and numbers,” Weissman said. “... I am always trying to come up with unique ideas for events, so this was definitely unique.”
Last year was the first year SASi held the Pi Day pie throwing event, and Weissman said they raised more than $900.
Pies will consist of whipped cream on paper plates, and will cost $10 for a small and $20 for a large. Volunteers will be covered and pie throwers will be required to stand a couple feet away, so they will not be able to squish it into someone’s face.
There will also be “surrogates” available, Weissman said. If somebody wants to throw a pie at one of the volunteers but can’t make it to the event, they can call SASi by Thursday morning and make payment arrangements.
The pie throwing will be done after lunch this year, beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday at SASi, 820 Main St.
For those who would like to have lunch, RSVP is required by calling SASi at 208-263-6860 by 9 a.m. Wednesday. Leaving a message on the machine Tuesday night is acceptable as well. Lunch will be corned beef and cabbage with pie for dessert. Lunch is $8 for those under 60 years old, and by donation for people over 60.
