Edwin D. ‘Bud’ Oakland, 93

Edwin D. “Bud” Oakland, age 93, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, died March 3, 2019. He was born May 18, 1925, in Luverne, Rock County, Minn., to Ed A. and Mabel A. (Wulf) Oakland. He attended eight grades in a country school and completed high school in 1943 at Luverne High. His early years were spent on a farm south of Luverne. In 1944, he went into the Navy and trained at the Great Lakes Training Station, in Illinois. He then served on a minesweeper in the South Pacific as an Electrician’s Mate 3C. He was honorably discharged in June of 1946. In September 1946 he enrolled at Worthington Jr. College, where he met his bride-to-be, Evelyn Bisch, who was secretary and registrar. They were married on August 22, 1947.

Bud was a commercial weed sprayer and co-owner of a city bus line in Worthington. In 1951, after studying U.S. weather maps, a decision was made to move to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. In 1987, he retired from Allstate Insurance after 26 years as an insurance agent in Coeur d’Alene. Prior to working with Allstate, he was in sales for several different local businesses.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a life-member of each of the following organizations: NRA, VFW, Coeur d’Alene Skeet and Trap, Coeur d’Alene Rifle and Pistol Club, Elks Lodge 1254 and Ben Franklin Masonic Lodge No. 114, in Minnesota. He and his wife enjoyed many years of traveling in their RV, wintering in Arizona and Texas and seeing most of the states, including two and a half months in Alaska and several visits to Canada. He had a passion for all of the shooting sports and for hunting since he was 10 years of age.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Mabel Oakland; sister, Audrey Wildung; and brother, William Oakland. Survivors include wife, Evelyn; son, Charles E. (Linda) Oakland; daughter, Rebecca (Ken) Clegg; grandson, Chad (Niki) Oakland; granddaughter, Corryn Oakland and great-grandchildren, Brady, Cooper, Tatum and Miller Oakland.

The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2019, at First Presbyterian Church in Coeur d’Alene, with Yates Funeral Home in care of the arrangements. A reception will follow the service at the church.
