COEUR d’ALENE — A Coeur d’Alene man accused of threatening to “slice and dice” a Rathdrum property owner, and who, according to witnesses, frightened a woman with a knife before punching her in the face, is in the Kootenai County jail facing four felonies.

Michael S. South, 44, was on probation after serving part of a five-year prison term for a 2011 aggravated assault conviction when he was arrested and charged Monday in First District Magistrate Court.

South is charged with attempted strangulation, two counts of aggravated assault and one count of domestic battery. Magistrate Timothy Van Valin set bond at $150,000.

According to deputies, South and his girlfriend were at a Montana hot spring when they had an argument. The 30-year-old girlfriend told authorities that South beat up a man in Montana, was arrested and posted bail.

The woman reportedly returned to Idaho by herself and stayed at a Rathdrum residence where the latest fracas occurred. Deputies said South showed up at the home and demanded his girlfriend leave with him. When she refused, he allegedly pulled a knife from a sheath that he had tucked into his waistband, grabbed the woman by the neck, threatened to kill her, and then punched her in the face.

When the property owner attempted to intervene, he was also threatened, according to deputy reports.

“He got all puffed up and threatened to slice and dice me,” Rathdrum resident Roger Oliver wrote in a statement. “He began to bang on the door making death threats.”

Van Valin ordered a no-contact order and set a preliminary hearing within 14 days.

The woman was arrested on a bench warrant for a probation violation.
