BOISE — Eastern Washington’s bid for its first NCAA Tournament berth in 32 years slipped away in the final 5 1/2 minutes Friday afternoon.

The Eagles led by seven points with 5:35 remaining, but scored just two points the rest of the way.

Portland State freshman Desirae Hansen sank a 12-foot jumper from the right of the key with 3.1 seconds left to lift the fourth-seeded Vikings past No. 6 EWU 61-59 in the championship game of the Big Sky Conference women’s basketball tournament at CenturyLink Arena.

Eastern (13-20) had a chance to tie in the final second, but a baseline jumper by Violet Kapri Morrow hit the rim and skipped off at the buzzer.

“First, congratulations to Portland State. They played a terrific game and had a great run this tournament. I feel like my heart has been ripped out my chest right now, obviously,” EWU coach Wendy Schuller said. “Our seniors and the rest of this team laid it out there like I’ve never seen a team lay it out there for four games in a row. I couldn’t be prouder to be their coach and honestly, I just feel really bad that I couldn’t get them to the NCAA Tournament. They deserved it and worked so hard for it, and I feel bad I couldn’t get them there.”

Eastern’s only appearance in the NCAAs came in 1987, when the Eags won the Big Sky tourney. EWU was playing in the conference title game for the first time since 1988.

Portland State (25-7) won its first Big Sky tourney title since 2010, and second all-time. The Vikings will learn their NCAA tourney destination on Monday.

Eastern Washington led for over 29 minutes, including a 57-50 lead with 5:35 to go in the fourth quarter. From there, Portland State used a 9-0 run to take a 59-57 lead with 1:50 left on the clock. EWU’s Jessica McDowell-White tied the contest with a 5-foot runner with 20 seconds left.

Alissa Sealby led the Eagles with 15 points, and McDowell-White added 14. Morrow and freshman Grace Kirscher (Sandpoint High) each finished with nine points.

Ashley Bolston scored a game-high 16 points for Portland State. Hansen finished with four points.

Morrow ended her storied career with Eastern Washington seventh on the all-time scoring list, just 31 points away from sixth. She finishes with 1,357 career points, 545 rebounds and 145 assists, just the eighth player in program history to garner over 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 100 assists in a career.
