Feast, not famine, thanks to generous community

The Salvation Army Kroc Center’s Families Feeding Families campaign was a great success, according to April Near.

“Individuals, families, businesses and nonprofits brought in loads of food,” she said in an email to The Press. “We were able to fill the shelves of 19 local food banks and ministries in North Idaho. That’s a 26.1 percent increase from the previous year and we were able to serve five additional food banks. We couldn’t have done it without such an incredible community donating food, funds and their time.”

The Families Feeding Families Drive was conducted in February to fill the gap of food supplies for area food banks that usually receive an abundance of donations around the holidays, but tend to see a drop once the calendars turn to January.

“We were a little nervous if people would respond to a food drive outside the holiday season,” said Kip Sharbono, director of community outreach and youth education for the Kroc Center. “We were overwhelmed by the generosity that was shown.”
