Glen Edward Abbott, 94

Glen left us to be with the Lord on March 13, 2019. His journey started Dec. 12, 1924. He was born in Harrington, Wash., to Walter L. Abbott and Emily D. Marshall.

In school, Glen excelled both academically and in sports. He was student body president in his sophomore and senior year. In his junior year, he was vice president.

He participated in drama, where he had major parts in three plays. In sports, Glen lettered in baseball for three years, in basketball for four years and football for four years. In his senior year, he was captain of the football team.

On Sept. 11, 1943, Glen married Mae L. Rasmussen, of Rockford, Wash. Shortly after, he enlisted in the Navy. Reporting to duty at Farragut, Idaho, he completed his training at Camp Waldron. Upon completion, he took leave to see his first born daughter, Virginia Mae. After a short visit, he was off to the Asiatic Pacific area in the World War II campaign. After the war, Glen returned to work in Davenport, Wash., where he worked for five years before moving to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to take a job with General Telephone of the Northwest.

Glen and Mae had two more children, Glen E. Abbott, Jr. and Audrey A. (Abbott) Humenik.

As a family man, Glen kept in shape by golfing, hunting, fishing, camping and playing baseball. He became an Idaho certified referee for football and basketball and an umpire for baseball. His services took him to many of the North Idaho schools and church leagues.

Glen and family attended services at the Christ the King Lutheran Church.

After 25 years of marriage, Glen and Mae were divorced. Glen remarried Virginia F. Purcell on Feb. 21, 1970. She had three sons, Steven Purcell, Stan Purcell and Scotty Purcell.

After 30 years, Glen retired from the General Telephone Company.

Glen and Virginia were active with the Coeur d’Alene Eagles Club — F.O.E. 486, where he was an Idaho state president, the Mountain West Eagle President and was one of only three bell ringers in the state of Idaho when he established the Hayden Lake Eagles.

Glen was preceded in death by his father, Walter L. Abbott; his mother, Emily D. (Marshall) Abbott; his brothers, Walter L. Abbott and Dale Abbott; sister, June Etter; his brother-in-law, Bud Etter and granddaughter, Pamela Clough.

Glen is survived by his brother, Leroy Abbott and wife, Anita; sisters-in-law, Mary Abbott and Hazel Abbott; his children, Virginia (Abbott) Clough and Rick, Glen E. Abbott Jr. and Cindy, Audrey (Abbott) Humenik and Dave, Steve Purcell and Bobbie, Stan Purcell and Michelle, and Scotty Purcell and Angie.

He has 18 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on March 22, 2019, at the English Funeral Chapel, located at 1133 N. Fourth St., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on March 23, 2019, at the Christ the King Lutheran Church, located at 1700 E. Pennsylvania Ave., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
