SANDPOINT — A Ponderay man was arrested last Saturday for striking a man with his minivan and threatening another with a 2-pound sledgehammer.

Adrian Charles Needs is charged with one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and two counts of aggravated assault with deadly weapons.

Needs, 25, made an initial appearance in Bonner County Magistrate Court on Monday. Information on his bail and legal representation were not immediately available.

A Bonner County Sheriff’s deputy on patrol encountered Needs’ minivan in a snow berm separating the pedestrian path and the road at roundabout at Schweitzer Cutoff Road and North Boyer Avenue at approximately 7:30 p.m. Needs spotted his former wife with two other man walking and passed through the traffic circle several times to yell at them, the arrest report said.

Needs, witnesses said, drove his minivan into the leg of a 36-year-old, got out of the vehicle and threatened the other man with the sledgehammer. Needs swung the hammer several time, but the man was able to dodge the blows, a probable cause affidavit said.

Needs attempted to leave the scene, but was stopped a short distance away. Needs said he swung on one of the men because he had threatened him over social media, the affidavit said. Needs denied striking the other man with the minivan, according to court documents.
